As we approach next week's Inauguration, let us reflect on our country and the world around us. In an effort to explore this with a light heart and some humor, browse Daryl Cagle's political cartoon site: http://cagle.msnbc.com/

Explore the various cartoons and choose one to critique. Write about the significance of one of the events depicted in the editorial cartoons.

In the political cartoon there are two people standing both of them have a rifle. They are both saying that they aren’t fighting over religion they are fighting over the plot of land. The first guy says that his holy book says the land belongs to him and the second guy says the mosque elders say that the land is his. This cartoon is pointing out how influenced by religion the majority of conflicts are. In the cartoon both of the guys are saying that they aren’t fighting over religion, but that they are fighting over the land. In truth however the conflict is completely based on religion and that religion is all that’s causing the conflict.

In the political cartoon there are two nurses talking to each other in a psychiatric ward. Another two men are sitting on a couch; one looks like a crazy hobo and the other a clean cut man in a suit. One nurse says to take the scruffy looking man to the psych ward because he believes in leprechauns and take the clean cut man that believes in angels to his room on the 14th floor; he’s the new CEO.
The cartoon is saying that people that believe in religion are crazy and it’s the same as believing in a mythical creature.

In the cartoon I chose, there is a giant snowflake that has fallen though a house. There are two people in the house who appear to be husband and wife. They are both looking at the giant snowflake, which has destroyed a large part of their home, in amazement. The husband says, “You’re right, it has been an unusual winter.” I like this cartoon a lot because it is exaggerated humor. It is also visually very funny, but it’s still making its point on the subject of this year’s winter. One of my favorite parts of the cartoon is the dog. The dog adds a small portion of humor, which is for me, the icing on the cake of the whole cartoon. Overall the cartoon was a great way to make light of the heavy winter that has been going on this year.

This shows how secretive the government really is. So many lies and cover ups in the world today. The United States public is only really aware of that in which the government wants its people to know. The media only divulges the information they are given by the government so in away they just help the government in the covering up other information.

In the political cartoon I chose, you see Obama walk into a room that is so cluttered with many toys and a kid version of Bush. The toys are all in a mess and nothing is proper or organized. The toys seen in the cartoon include: a Saddam doll hanging from a lamp, an angry Bin Laden, a dollhouse with a foreclosed sign in the front, a bear mask with a USSR hat on, cowboy hat and gun, an aircraft carrier with no planes on it, a Guantanamo Bay play set with tortured prisoner and angry security guard, a spilt oil drum, a war drum, severed army figures, bombs are everywhere throughout the picture, a broken globe, a bloody knife, decrepit muslim buildings, toy guns, army vehicles, a broken statue of liberty, and finally a map of the world that has been thoroughly defaced. All of these things are a metaphor for how reckless and destructive Bush has been and the problems that he has made for the next President to clean up.

My political cartoon is about Olympic athletes in association to the use of steroids. There are three large men being asked by a doctor to give a urine sample to test for steroids. In response, the men say yes but they were woman. This shows how steroids can affect the human body and make them look very large and sometimes they can look like the opposite sex. Being an athlete isn’t about being strong or muscular, it is about the talent you posses and how you use it. The three men symbolized truth and how it is not always told.

The cartoon that I chose was a man in a sign shop painting signs that read "Going out of Business". To business are walking by looking through the window talking about how the sign shop is the only shop still in buiness because the owner is always one step ahead of everybody. This is creative because the owner is making signs that say "Going out of Business" and he's doing so well because all the other stores are going through such a bad time they buy the signs to show that their store is closing.

In this politcal cartoon there is a couple that live on a farm and they are standing at a news stand with magazines inside and the couple says "OH, My Goodness! Britney Spears is in trouple AGAIN" While they are saying there a giant tornato has taken there house and farm and is whirling them around and yet all they care about is Britney Spears. This cartoon is showing how people care more about famous people and their lives. Its just dumb entertainment when they should focus more on the important things like there home and shelter for example. People should leave the stars alone and pay attention to whats important in life.
